Trading
“I joined METL in 2000 as a Port Operations Officer.
I came to the job with minimal experience, but following induction training and
on-going guidance from the trading department, I have been able to deepen my
knowledge and develop my skills in ways that I never anticipated. It is
extremely fulfilling to be part of one of the largest trading houses in
Tanzania, which is manned by motivated and go-getting people who are all experts
in different areas of international trade. As of 2004, I have been promoted to
Port Operations In-Charge at METL. It feels great to see my accomplishments
rewarded and makes me even more motivated to play my role in making the trading
division at METL a formidable task-group, and one to be reckoned with”.

“Having worked in Kenya for over 20
years as a miller, I was seeking change and a fresh working
environment. My decision to join the METL Group in preference to
my other offers was based on the organisation’s strong
reputation in East Africa. It has been my pleasure to add value
to METL’s business using my previous training and experience. I
work with a fabulous team of colleagues, all professionals in
their fields, and to know that you have the support and guidance
of these people makes such a big difference. While I still have
much to give and much to learn from METL, I am excited about
what the future holds. At METL, you can aim as high as your
talent takes you”.

Agriculture
“I joined METL in 1997, when the
company diversified into agriculture. Having qualified with a
Masters in Ecology from Aberdeen University, UK and with my
experience and exposure in the field of ecology and agriculture,
I was recruited as a Development Manager. I enjoy the people I
work with and the open-minded and receptive approach of the
management. This has given me the freedom and space to plan,
design and implement my ideas and has contributed to the feeling
that I have an impact on results. Whilst there is plenty of room
for further diversification and commercialisation of agriculture
on the METL farms, it is a pleasure to develop my career with
this big and fast growing company – a vision of delight”.

Distribution
METL’s mission has always been to be
a successful company dealing in quality products. But in its
determination to be a profitable organisation, the company has
not lost its focus on its duty for ethical and responsible
business. People are the most valuable company asset and our
customers are our most important focus; the delivery of products
that are affordable and meet the needs of consumers has always
been our motto. It is exciting to see the extent to which METL
products reach out to so many people in Tanzania and this has
been truly motivating for me. It makes me extremely proud when I
think of the number of people I overhear talking about our
products - zeven on a public bus!”

Corporate
“I have former qualifications in
Engineering and Management and when I joined the METL Group I
already had 25 years experience in industry. A good part of my
experience was in start-up operations. In 1997, METL had just
started venturing into industry and I was very excited about the
prospect of being part of a growing and expanding organisation.
Eight years down the line, I can proudly say that although I was
already very experienced, I have learnt a great deal from
working in this Group and my association with highly qualified
teams in a competitive environment has been rewarding. I hope to
be a part of METL until
I retire!”

Finance and Accounts
I came to my existing position fresh out of university and my
experience was limited to short summer placements. Nevertheless,
from the start I was trusted and given the feeling that I could
make a difference in my own way. I have been at METL for a short
time but my swift adjustment to the organisation, thanks to its
remarkable working environment, makes me feel as though I have
been here for years!”

Internal Audit
“I joined METL just before it began
expanding its business activities. As with other departments in
the company, the workload for the audit section also grew
rapidly but with hindsight all the learning that went with this
fast growth has been well worth it. I have expanded my horizons
beyond my imagination and what’s more, there is still much to
do! But the greatest enjoyment of my work is the fieldwork that
goes with it – the travel to upcountry branches and industrial
units for audit checks. From these visits, I have met so many
new people and seen so many new places – the exposure has been
incredibly exciting. I doubt that any other organisation could
have offered me the same challenges, excitement and career
aspirations as METL has”.

Liaison and Services
“I was employed in 1996 to manage
METLowned properties and to advise on acquisitions for
prospective properties. My job profile since then has
diversified and now also includes the registration of new
companies and trademarks. For me METL is an organisation that
symbolises limitless opportunities; an organisation that
flourishes in an environment marked by fairness and the belief
that even the status quo can be improved upon. Indeed the
competition is great and it is challenging to work in an
atmosphere where everyone around you is driven to succeed. This
has been my motivation; my expectation of performing with
excellence on a continuous basis”.

Administration
“Joining METL – one of the largest
business conglomerates in Tanzania – has been both everything I
expected and completely unexpected! I have enhanced my ability
to think outside the box and whilst there have been situations
when the working curve has been challenging, it is never boring.
My work has exposed me to different businesses, people, cultures
and places and my involvement in a number of different
functional areas has helped build my confidence and
interpersonal communication skills. It has been fulfilling for
me to be given the opportunity to work with some of the best
professionals in an organisation that has an outstanding
performance and genuinely believes in the key contribution of
people’s development efforts. This makes life interesting”.

Human Resources
“While providing enormous job
opportunities at all levels, another of METL’s greatest
strengths lies in the diversity of the people that it employs.
Employees emanate from three continents – Africa, Asia and
Europe – and the organisation recruits for a very wide range of
professions including, amongst others, engineers, accountants
and agriculturalists. It is a privilege to be working in such a
dynamic and multicultural environment, where differences are
cherished and where the combined experiences of people from
Tanzania and abroad make METL a really special place to be”.
