METL has been providing health assistance to the poorest people in Tanzania for many years, with particular focus on sight problems, which affect many tens of thousands of people in the country. In addition to providing free healthcare to all employees and their families, the company has also worked with the Lions Club of Mzizima where METL has helped more than 600 people with either cataract operations or free glasses. The availability of a clean, convenient and reliable fresh water supply is also a major contributor to health problems in Tanzania with many millions of people having no access to good water. METL has involved itself in a number of community water schemes and has installed 20 bore wells to date. Over the years, METL has also been involved in work to enhance the lives of physically disabled people (many of whom have suffered from polio). During the 1990s the company donated 65 wheel chair tricycles to disabled people.
